It has been four years and I've never ever been able to leave it behind. In nearly every interview I've had since then, whether it be for work or school, I've never failed to mention that it was my pride, my joy and my motivation to keep on working and pushing through because that's the very place I've learned these qualities from. The second home I've been living in through my middle/high school life. And you all are, as cliche as it does sound, my beloved family members.

Through 2 cheer competitions and 2 SYFs (during my time), so much the band has gone through, so much everyone gained, so much more to share and understand why the process is paramount in getting to where we are.

We all cried, those tears of anguish when we weren't appreciated, our efforts weren't reciprocated, misunderstandings between us, leading to more lectures and cursing; those tears of joy and happiness when we finally achieved what we wanted, when every single one of us finally realized the true meaning of what teamwork is about.

Sure there were obstacles. Sure there was unhappiness, despise and hatred for what we had wanted to love. I ain't an exception. Many a time I wanted to give up. Many a time I could see people wanting to throw in their unused towel. How much more can we bear before another crumbles and leaves a trail behind?

The leaders screamed.
The members couldn't be fucked.
The teachers were exasperated.
What an equation with a really assed derived answer.

If I could recall those memories in the early part of 2004, the year with the SYF void, there was time to organize a cheer group to participate in the annual Sports Day Inter-CCA Cheer Competition. Myself heralding the company then, I attempted to recruit the recruits (lol) which was a traditional affair to get the secondary one members involved. It was a fruitless effort which brought myself and my fellow leaders to gather the secondary two members instead. It could have been easier if they weren't already pissed off from the fact that they were the ones who had to go through more dreaded marching and shouting sessions with me. In addition, drawing up formation charts, counting steps, creating cheers, organizing more practices and uniform distribution added much more to our work strain. (Damn tiring okay. Sheesh.) The best part was having some seniors giving us the thumbs-down during one of our practices without only half the members around. Of course we were upset, of course we were disappointed, of course our spirits were dampened and there were only a few weeks left. What else could we have done? Either give up there and then, or push through till the end.

So there we were, after much arguing with some members and negative feedback, we just did what we did. And what had to happen was, yes, I screwed up. I didn't drop the mace (fortunately) but oh well, that was in the past. Timothy cried. Yes you did! And I'd like to give a shout out to the secondary two members from back then (Hannah, Krystal, Ulric, Kun Loong, Michelle, Fiona, Tricia, Lee Yen and many more), the few secondary ones who participated (Xin Ni, Yan Ling, Jason and WAX) and most of all to my fellow leaders who had made all this possible. Jacqueline, Regina, Timothy, Alvin, Kun Yu, Betsy. And of course, the band's support and the percussion section.

Who can ever forget SYF in the year 2005?
The most stressful period I've ever had been through in band, on top of the fact that it was my graduating year, the final year in ZHSS. Plenty of new introductions. Plenty of new transitions. Plenty of new skills to learn.

I could mention every single time I had to chase, every single time I had to lecture, every single time I had shed tears because it was getting on my nerves. I had wondered so many times over and over, why the fuck was I putting in so much effort for something that wasn't going to affect my future career-wise and that no one seemed to be appreciating what I was doing?

So many changes.
Too much to cope with.
The committee was bound and supportive, for which I was extremely grateful for.
Yet, I could have done more. So much more.
It was never enough, wasn't it?

Members dropped from the SYF line-up.
Frustrations and flared tempers at rehearsals, sectionals and even at fall-ins.
The counting down of the days and the number of practices we had left before the actual day of our defining performance.

"BAND! DOWN! NOW!"
"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?"
I was such an asshole. One of my senior DMs once mentioned that although it doesn't seem to appear on the surface, being a DM involves everyone hating you. Was that the case? I wasn't surprised, even I had realized that from the first time I pumped the band.

The uniform saga.
At it had been repeated over and over, the blazers never reached us in time because they were still "swimming from Batam". Hence, we wore white long-sleeved shirts, dark grey pants, black shoes, the school ties and the girls had their hair bunned up. Every single strand of hair out of the face. Unless you had short bangs which can't be helped. If not, then it's the hairpins and hair gel. The first thing that came to my mind was that we looked like a funeral band. Had we sounded like one?

Final Destination. SCH.
Waiting in the lobby. Waiting for our turn into the tuning room where an unexpected event involving a player being commanded not to play later. Waiting with the other bands before entering the hall. Yuying and Beatty Secondary School bands were right before us with River Valley High after us. It was extremely nerve-wrecking. Our uniforms beside Beatty's white military outfits with tassels and badges complete with high-knee socks seemed utterly woeful. We refused to listen to their music because it might throw us off-track. Finally, our turn came.

Honestly, I panicked. Because my sitting position wasn't aligned. But heck that. So we sat, and just played. Who cared about who thought we were a band with no future? Why bother about those sneers and jeers? It was the greatest experience any band member could have. It being SYF was just a bonus, with the award a cherry on a cupcake. That was when I realized every single moment through those gruelling practices was worth it. Being able to play with your members who cared about band, who had passion like you, and were dedicated enough to come to rehearsals on time and understand the importance of 'one band one sound, one missing no sound'. And that was it.

Everyone else left while the sec5s, Beatrice, Miss Chan and myself stayed on for the results. More performances by other bands before waiting for what seemed like eternity the judges to deliberate and decide who will be eliminated (ANTM wtf just kidding). It was rather entertaining initially, watching the other bands' reactions to their results. Some cheered loudly, some were utterly depressed and I saw this particular member waiting to jump in his seat and had to sink down when he heard his band...well, didn't do as well he must have thought. Then it came. Beatrice and I squeezed our eyes shut and clutched onto each other's hands as Ms. Michelle Quek (yes I remember her from NCO Camp) announced what we had been waiting for. And...we did it. Better than I had thought. The rest became a blur as both of us jumped and started screaming and hugging each other, every other eye in the hall on us. Who cared? We had done it. Except till Michelle asked us to sit down so she could announce the rest of the results.

I could relieve that moment again and again, replaying in my head until I disintegrate. The return to school was another unforgettable scene. Having most of the members still around, waiting for us to celebrate our victory and our band.

Of course, this hasn't become a note just about SYF. It's so much more than that.
Beatrice and I weren't amused the very next day when the very same band performed poorly at the Sports Day contingent rehearsal. It was kind of laughable really.

Nevertheless, what drives everyone is a common and mutual understanding.
Any leader, any member and any teacher could have preached in over and over that even I get tired of hearing what I have said and what others have said. Because it doesn't have to be this way. Attending band practice isn't just for the sake of attendance. Is it that big a deal that you have made the attendance mark for your CCA grade? What's so amazing about telling people that you know how to play a musical instrument in a band without listening to the others?

I can safely say, right here and now, that I have absolutely no respect for those who don't turn up to practices regularly without valid reason and simply appear in crucial performances and end up screwing everything up. What's the point? I'm not saying that these members are dispensable. What I'm trying to put across is just this question - what are your priorities?

What I'd really hate to see in time to come, are unhappy band members who regret. It's the worst situation you can be in because you have lost a priceless experience you could have been through if only you had understand what you had wanted then.

Band isn't just a music CCA to collect points, blowing a song or two and calling it a day.
Remember that whatever you are putting in right now, is going to come out the other way, in your face, soon enough.

Although it has been ages, my time has never ended. Nor has any alumni's. We've already been through that phase and have moved on, but we leave a print in the music room and band store that can never be erased. I am proud to have been part of Zwinds. I am proud to have the current members as my juniors because I know they're all going to be useful members of society in the near future. If there is any other reason to substantiate that, it is that you are being true to your own passion. Don't disappoint yourself. Live it and believe it.

1. People in bold are the leader of the group. One group consists of 3-4 people.
2. People in bold, leaders, will be in charge of collecting the money from selling the drinks.
The money will be put in one container.
Leaders will appoint one person to be the one constantly checking the 2 coolers which we are going to have.

Instructions for drinks mobile(people walking around to sell):

1. People in underlined are to collect the money, while the other person give the drinks.
2. You’ll be getting the drinks from the respective 2 stalls.
3. Pair 1 to 2, will get from drinks stall 1, pair 3-5, will get from drinks stall 2.
4. There will be a basket for you to put your drinks. Do not take ice or water with you, just take the drinks. Take both bottles and cans with you.
5. IMPORTANT: If you have not enough change, one person, the leader, go run to the nearest stall and get the change. The other person: tell the customers politely “we are very sorry, we don’t have enough change. can you kindly wait for a second while we get the change for you.”, (chat with them in the process, up to you what you want to say, but be POLITE) , if you are somewhere near the band booth, then bring them to the booth, so they will not be so bored and standing over there waiting for the change.
6. IMPORTANT: we are only walking on the first floor.

We are going to have a game at the booth from 11.30 - 12, and 4 - 4.30. For this game, we will play a solo piece to the audience, and they will have to guess what instrument is used for this solo. The hosts for the games are stated above, so pls stay at the booth duing this 2 time slots. For every timeslot, 2 pairs will mend the booth while the remaining pairs walk around to give doorgifts. you all can take turns changing.

As the M&M performers need to get ready by 1230, so from 12 - 3 onwards, the seniors and non-performers will be helping out. hence, if possible, for the ppl on duty during this time, take a short break and help out for booth if you had finished your duty for drinks cause we're lack of people. similarily for the rest, if you had finish your duty, go have a short rest and come back to help out for either drink stalls or booth :)

Lunch break for M&M performers will be 12 noon. For seniors and non-performers, you all can have the freedom to eat your lunch anytime you want, haha! but make sure that the booths are being looked after.

hi people! it's 1st of september, and yes, it's TEACHERS' DAY! ^^

firstly, HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY to our dear instructors and teachers-in-charge. thank you for everything you had done for this band, and also, teaching us the values in life. you all made me realised that band is not as simple as just playing an instrument, there are definitely more things one can learn from. at the end of the day, when i walked out from the band room, i will definitely bring with me all that you have taught, like "measure twice, cut once." and learning to serve. whenever things went wrong, or we were not trying our best, you guys did not give up on us but instead, encouraged us to go further and motivated us with your anecdotes. thank you for all the efforts you had put in for this band and we really appreciate it. you all had certainly touched our lives, and made a difference in everyone of us.

to the seniors and alumni of the band, yes! you are our teacher too! (: you may not be one who teach us amaths etc, but you guys were, without doubt, the ones who taught us the basics and all, for band. without you, all of us might not even know how to set up the instrument the correct way, or even maintain it. without you, some of us might not even know how to read a simple score nor the fingerings for every note. without you, the band would not even be what it is today. thank you for lightening the workload of our instructors, as well as paving this road for all of us, putting in your most into zwinds. thank you for building this band up, and rest assure, we will continue to bring this band up and so will the later generations. the tears, the sweat, the joy, the hard work and all that you had put in this band, will definitely not go to waste.

last but not least, to every single one of you in band, thank you for the time and efforts you had put. i had learnt quite a lot from everyone of you without you knowing it! i guess it's all these small little life lessons we learnt from each other that makes zwinds so unique(: let us continue working hard and cherish the time we have together. unleash your potential and do your best for everything you do. that's the motto of my primary school, haha! hard work will always pay off. as long as you don't give up on yourself and on one another, all that you had put in will be worthwhile. remember, you reap what you sow.

to the sec4/5s, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. so, besides mugging for your prelims, take some time off to have a break too! :) all the best for your preliems and Os, jia you!

to the rest, all play and no work makes Jack no.2 a lazy boy. so, learn from both Jack no1 and Jack no2, you'll get Jack no3, one who spends his time wisely and set his priorities right. study hard for your EOYs, and i hope all of you can acheive your goals. although there might be times you really feel like giving up, think about those periods when all of us persevered on and how we managed to succeed in the end. keep the faith there, and i know all of us can do it. :)

this must come really sudden and unexpected but i hope its not a bad thing you guys know you're still missed by me and of course your other seniors the o6 and 07 batch! haha!

havent been really going back for awhile thanks to jc life but i really hope things are good for all of you and you guys haven been bullying mr chew! Hi Mr Chew! if you do read! i miss you and mrs chew! lunch soon!

anyway, just wanted to say hi and remind you guys to enjoy your band days, good and bad, because its really a once in a life time opportunity. jc band is not like what you have in secondary school. much less your universities. so yea, dont be harsh with your words and hold your tongue whenever you feel its going to be something negative. its something we all should learn along the way. ((:
appreciate all that you have and never be too afraid to feel bad of your identity of Zwinds no matter how people try to put you down!

Hey guys.

I've never ever blogged on this blog before so yep. Well, there's always a first i guess.

To the current Zwinds band now, have faith in yourself, your section, your band and mr chew. That's all I can say to you guys now. We'd love to see you really really fulfill your capabilities and stop lacking confidence. Really, after everything we've taught you, you should shine. As in, really really really shine. So stop lacking faith. Play it out, put in effort. If you've said you've already tried, I'm sure you can see the improvement and that should encourage you to push further cuz you can. This is a wake up call. You want to see results for SYF next year, you really gotta work hard this year and next, not last minute than start to chong. Play music and just enjoy. I know its hard to when you guys are tired and feel all of this pressure is taxing and just weighing down on you guys. But can you at least have some pride in yourself? As in, maintain a certain standard or just improve. I mean, don't degrade yourself to a lousy sound, playing only for the sake of playing. You're in this together now. Encourage each other, play with each other. Do whatever you want with each other or whatever you do. ... Don't get that wrong. :x But yeah. Just really really do your best so that when you get out of that competition next year, you won't get any regrets like what some of you may have had last year. Get in there, do your best. No matter whether its a normal practice or a concert or whatever. Do your best each time. Put in that effort and apply whatever you know you should apply. Don't have the thoughts of, "I'm gonna die" or "I could have done this" or "i could have done that". Cuz it'll already be toooooo late. Just think about it, ok? I can't say ath else. So cheers to Zwinds. Your seniors will be rooting for you all the way and HAVE FAITH, aiight?

At least you're lucky enough to get it over and done with, and have your holidays at the end of next month. As for me, my examinations only start a week AFTER your holidays have begun. What a timing. Hello, this is Yi Ching blogging.
For those current members who don't remember, I'm that alumni with black&yellow hair who came back on the last Saturday practice during the June holidays and terrorized you at the parade square.

Times have changed and so have we, so progress for progress's sake must be encouraged. No, the Ministry of Alumni isn't going to interfere in Zwinds, if that's what you're thinking.

How previous batches of seniors have led before, what my batch and I had been exposed to, and how we taught our direct batch of juniors, are nearly constrastingly different to how that current batch of your Secondary 3 leaders are managing the band right now. I don't deny (and I believe most of you would actually admit) that even though I was only present for a mere marching session, my harshness level was dozens higher and many definitely hated me (to beat me) to bits. I know; I've been there and done that.

Nevertheless, here's something to ponder.

1. Think about your priorities.
2. Think about your surroundings - family, friends, school, peers etc.
3. Think about your future (I am serious. Just because you're only in Secondary School now doesn't mean you can rest on your laurels and not think of what's coming for you. Yes, growing up and graduating).

To the leaders, the seniors and alumni aren't going to be there for you all the time, neither are we going to point out that this or that is supposed to be the way to lead. This is your time; your time to lead and bring the band towards, as cliche as it sounds, to greater heights. I must admit, less alumni have been coming back already to observe and scrutinize the band, and later on, give the leaders an earful on this problem they spy and that issue they're concerned about. Regardless, this doesn't mean that you can slack off and take a back seat. Push forward and bring your members along with you. Respect them and they'd respect you in return.

Remember that a band has to work as a team. One team, unbroken and unfazed, determined to prove its worth to itself and to others that this team is not one to be trifled with and that everyone is to be together, united as a whole.

Remember that,
Band is always the Best, (arrogant no? hurhur)
And always will be.

tml's your performance at serangoon gardens and remember this, wherever it is or whoever it is for, give it your best. whether its grand or not, be appreciative of Mr Chew and your teachers who took the effort to arrange it for you guys!

(or is that live every day as if it were you last?) anyhoos, do make sure you guys drink lots of water and do your long tone studies! if not your fwahs and pahs will start coming back and then mr chew will get irritated then you guys will get a trashing then you people start grumbling and emo-ing then you try and work harder for like one practice then you forget again then... aiyah, you get what i mean lah? okay, so all the best for your performance this sunday!

its time of the year when everyone is suppose to be studying real hard for their exams because zwinds is suppose to be able to juggle it all and show the school that we not only excel in music but also in studies!

sec1s who need help can always look for sec2s!
sec2s go find your sec3s!
and the same goes for sec3s! look for your sec4s!
and sec4s, you can just go after your teachers!
i am sure they are all most willing to help you but no promises that they will give you what you are looking for! =D
it will be good to form a study group and revise for your exams because that means you will always have help but dont end up chatting or playing!
FOCUS!

STUDY HARD NOW AND ENJOY THE FRUITS OF YOUR LABOUR AFTER THE EXAMS ENDS!

and always remember to treat yourself to something nice after it all ends regardless of how you think you have done because you have done your best!

Band Pledge

I think SYF2007 has been a good year for all. I've seen like so many band members work hard and long for the 12th of April. D-day! I've seen many juniors who never used to come for band come with such committment. I've seen the band bond together, individuals becoming a band. Individuals, banding together to make music. Individuals becoming a team. There's no I in teamwork and we have all learnt that.

A huge round of applause goes out to all band members who have worked hard and contributed towards SYF 2007. and also to all the non syf members for playing such a supportive role in helping the band in such a crucial time. You guys have formed a camaraderie that is strong. I'm sure the secondary fours would feel this way, coming into band as individuals, but going out as a band. The tears and sweat have not gone to waste. Your seniors are all proud. Your seniors have seen you work your asses off. Your seniors are proud to be from this band, and so should you! There's no shame in getting a silver, only shame is that your efforts were not recognised. But who cares? You are only as good as your last performance, so to quote from Mr. chew. thus, gear up for your next performance, cos it doesn't matter what you get for syf. what matters is the music you play, the committment, the enjoyment, the fun of playing as a band. We are not a CCA, we are a FAMILY. We bond together in times of need. We make music come rain, come shine. That's what a band is all about. It is more than a bunch of people sitting down to make music. It's a group of people coming together to create art, to create music. You all have done that, and done it right.

Lastly, I think that your leaders all deserve a rousing applause for their effort and committment. It is not an easy job to do. Especially come syf. So they have put up a FANTASTIC show and they deserve your respect. No one ever said being a leader was easy, and i'm sure they can tell you that. So next time you see your leaders, go give them a hug or a handshake, tell them thanks for everything. They deserve it.

hi guys!
glad you guys all enjoyed yourself today from the start as you all fall in at 5am!
i suppose the bow ties were something really fresh and nice? ((:
great journey from the start and despite long waits,we treasured it.
i hope this doesnt act as depresser but rather a motivation force to drive you guys onwards!
2007 is not even halfway to the end yet!
enjoy what is planned ahead of you by God and be thankful for everything.
be thankful for having such a great conductor to such great pals.
learn to cherish. :)

its a growing experience and we'll move on from here!
adventure awaits you all ahead!

good playing and skills do not come overnight.
it takes time and last minute work doesnt help.
so the advice to the band right now is work on everything and the problem spots.
preparation for syf 09 should start now and not months nearing to syf.
cultivate the quality sound right now and you will get there in the year 2009!
even if you are a sec3 and wont be around for the year of 09, start all the preparation work with your juniors!
only then will you guys get there! if the current zwinds had the positive attitude from the beginging or mid last year,the results today would have been what you all had yearn for.
so get going now! :)

enough of tears for the day and time to get back to reality!
work towards the future and not dwell in the past!

ps. do you know national day preparation every year starts on the next day after the year before?
so it means to say last minute management wont get you there but rather consistent practice to excel.

so come on zwinds!
get the act together!

OKAY LISTEN UP (OR READ).

Two days of SYF Central Judging of Concert Bands has passed and I'm sure all of you have heard the results, which mostly are beyond what everyone had expected.

HOWEVER.
ALL THAT DOES NOT MATTER.

Look here.
Swiss winds is Swiss winds. YTWO is YTWO. CTwinds is CTwinds.
And whatever other bands there are, CHSSB, SPSMB, VSB etc.

DON'T COMPARE.
ZWinds have their own style of music and playing style, which is also unique for every other band. There's no way to predict what the judges will award you guys but there's no need to worry about that at all.

Most people would think SYF and getting a Gold/Gold with Honours is everything to Band. But that's utter rubbish.
Let your passion show through during your performance, exert that last bit of effort into the final lap and most of all, have fun with your fellow band members.
That's all that matters.
As long as you have done your best, there's nothing left to regret.

Most of the current members participating in this SYF wouldn't have had a taste of how it feels like performing under these circumstances yet. This is different from Primary Schools SYF and Dance/Choir/CO SYFs. It's normal to be nervous but it's definitely important to be confident onstage and play your music like you always have rehearsed.

There's no more room for remorse, depression or other negative feelings. Channel all of that emotion into your playing. Pay attention. Listen and watch Mr. Chew. Remember what you've learnt and apply it 100%.

This is ZWinds' time.
Face it. Do it. Accomplish it. Own it.

Its two more days to SYF. I know alot of you must be anxious and some even afraid cos for most of you its the first syf for you. Well, timo is here to say that go and rock that auditorium. We'll all be rooting for you in the audience! Don't lose hope or faith in yourselves. You have put in so much effort so it will reap. Don't worry. And even if you do not get expected results, rejoice in what you have. Do not despair, syf is but a stepping stone. A placement 'examination'. what's most important is you going up there to enjoy yourselves and your music. Treasure the last moments spent with your secondary 4s for after this they'll be going to step down. Band is not just a CCA, its a family. Your family. Everyone has a role to play, be it supporting or lead. there are no small actors, everyone plays an equally important role. Its been a long way. and you are almost at your destination. The next two days will be nerve wrecking no doubt, but just go on stage and know that you have done your best and no matter what, WE WILL BE PROUD OF YOU, WE WILL BE PROUD OF ZWINDS.

Gathering point: Rooftop carpark above the serangoon bus interchange
Time: 8 a.m.

Do bring along cash for your lunch, a bottle of water and an umbrella (in case of rain).
Also, please ensure that there is a sufficient amount of money stored in your ez-link card.

The groupings will be announced on the day itself.

You are also encouraged to bring along lots and lots of fun, enthusiasm and competitive spirits. Brace yourselves for a day of fun and games!

Listen up leaders of the band. I've been receiving lots and lots of feedback regarding how the band is being run and i'm here to tell you that its either you guys buck up and start solving things on your own, or risk facing your own dissemination. Your seniors are HIGHLY displeased with the attitudes of the committee now. We want a functioning committee that runs on drive and determination. One that is able to work together and one that is able to communicate. That means giving in to EACH OTHER. as much as i don't want to post this here, i feel certain degrees of public humiliation of the committee leaders is due here. You guys better start thinking of how to work together and not coming up with individual plans to suit your own individual needs. As leaders and team members, there is no I. It is completely based on giving in and compromising with each other. If you continue to allow yourselves to indulge selfishly in your own plans and refuse to compromise, your committee will become nothing but a lameduck committee. Not only that, it will become ineffective and unproductive. Your band has just begun to pick up the pace and progress. But it can only go THAT far unless leadership of the band is being brought up to standard. This falls short of what we expect as leaders from you and this is something that seniors all feel is lacking in your committee. Hate me for saying this but, if you do not work together to come up with proper plans and lists, the seniors WILL have something to say and we WILL make sure that something is done. This is not an empty threat but something that is existent and will be carried out should you seem to fail any further. We entrusted the band into your hands. You said that you will do your best to bring the band up. WE EXPECT NOTHING LESS THAN YOUR BEST.

this friday will be the 32nd SECONDARY SCHOOL BAND NCO CAMP PASSING OUT PARADE.
its 10th november and will commence at 1830.
pls be seated by 1815 though.

it will be held at the sports stadium of the CCA branch.
21 evans road and the nearest mrt station would be NEWTON.

pls make yourself free on this friday night to attend this annual event.
its going to be an eye opener.
all assistant majors and band commitee are to turn up for this event.
the entire band is strongly encouraged to be present on the day itself as well.

you guys can discuss to meet at newton mrt and take a bus down to the place.

The details are as follows:

Date: 24th November, Friday
Time: Concert Starts at 7pm.
Venue: Zhonghua's air-conditioned School Hall

The tickets are on sale at $8 each. Most members have been given a ticket each. People who are interested can approach the members.

Announcement:

The collection of the sale of tickets are situated on the 7th Nov and 16th Nov, a Tuesday and a Thursday respectively.
Pls be reminded that all the money collect will go to the band fund.

Members who require more tickets can approach their friends who have unsold tickets or ask Hui Yun, Matthew or Vanessa Yuen.

there will be familar pieces like the Lord of the Dance,Alvamar Overture,Curtains Up by Alfred Reed and many many more great exciting pieces!

was at the sony gallery in bishan j8 buying a pair of headphones.
the salesperson took my stuff and brought it to the cashier as he doing his stuff,he looked up and asked if i was from zh cause i was wearing school uniform.he said that he recognised our BAND,ZWINDS as a very good band.he said he heard our performances and knew what we(our seniors) attained for syf! isnt that GREAT? he truly made my day and i must really thank him for that!! hope to hear much more of these compliments so ZWINDS,work hard!! =D

Requiem for band

You know when the secondary 4s played their swansong, they left with much hope in their heart. the hope that this band will come through and clinch a gold once again at the singapore youth festival. the hope that the band will look to their leaders in times of need. the hope that the band will work together and not against each other. all these problems sprouting in the band is only due to one reason. and that reason is known as discipline. in the band today, i see zero discipline, both self discipline and discipline amongst members. i can see juniors talking back to seniors, i hear about politicking amongst the committee members, i see committment levels that are way below expectations. just pause and ask yourselves if you have been commiting any sins that are in line with these, i'm sure each and everyone has. this problem has always been around since forever. however, the only reson why it used to be suppressed to a minima was that the leaders showed control over the members. there was a sense of respect for the seniors. when we abolished the need for written band rules, it came with the understanding that we are to respect our seniors, instructors and teachers in charge at all times. i've seen many classic examples of this rule been broken, but many times punishment has been let off. as band members, you all need to decide for yourselves what you want and how you are going to achieve it. it doesn't really matter to seniors as they have already clinched their gold, and so when they go out, they are able to tell people that they got a gold for SYF. however, in terms of instructors, why Mr chew is so angry that you guys are not pushing yourselves is because at the rate you guys are going now, even with divine intervention, you can only get at most a silver. and this reflects badly on him and his reputation. this also reflects badly on ourselves. how a terrific instructor such as himself could produce such a lousy band. the band needs to make an effort to work at it. a matter of priorities and principles. since you have been officially inducted into the band, your principle should be that, its a committment you've made and you should stick by it. don't let distractions get the better of you. indeed, studies should remain your top priority as a student, however, there will always be time for band. it may sacrifice some leisure hours, but if you are able to sacrifice that and make band fun, then everything evens itself out. it's gonna be disappointing to see a band with so much potential crumble due to lack of determination and drive. you guys have what it takes. but its now a matter of do you really want it? how badly do you want it?

seniors before you put their sweat and blood and tears into raising the band from the ashes. when our ex instructors left, beatrice and yiching took resposibility of the band along with their committee to carry us through the window period. and that was less that 6 months before SYF. When mr chew arrived, you guys don't know how blessed we felt that we had such a wonderful instructor, no doubt strict and stern, he knew what we wanted and we delivered. it was a team effort we did with of course the direction of our instructors and the grace of God. Still, hard work should not go unrecognized. first of all was Jacqueline's fantastic solo that stirred the entire singapore conference hall, next was the oboe solo of beatrice that raised goosebumps with the tingling melody, then was the clarinet section's fantastic coordination that belted out a beautiful timbre of chordal melody followed by a solo passage for the clarinets. the trumpeters and horns together with the trombones made a very good timbre of brass ensemble, the tubas supported the bass line throughout with a fantastic tuba solo by shan chun. percussion kept the tempo steady and going throughout and the flautists provided much melodious tunes to the ears. this was what syf was, a chorus of music that felt better than anything, why? to us, that was more than just music, that was months of hard work that paid off. many times i remember the scoldings we got from yiching and beatrice, occasionally jacqueline. the various sections that worked hard. i remember even the pumpings that the clarinet section got from the SL for being too noisy or unproductive. all these you all are going through now is nothing compared to what we went through. we went through a communistic environment where everyone had to work hadr and long for our survival. you guys are going through a more democratic rule where you seem to have everything you want. however, don't forget where all these came from. are you really goning to let your seniors down? are you really going to let the instructors down? are you willing to let the school down? are you willing to let yourself down?

the most i can do as a senior is to remind you that nothing good comes by easy in this world. its all about meritocracy. you work hard, you get it. you don't, then too bad. i'm certian that some of you after reading this would think over what i said and decide for yourselves what you want. i'm also certain that some of you would let this roll off like water off a duck's back. i've said my piece and come what may, its up to you all to decide. if you want a bronze, then by all means go for it. but the disappointment would definitely bother the seniors who have put in so much, SO MUCH, effort into bringing this band up.

heyo... with permission from the authority... im here to address regarding todaes band prac..

as u guys may noe.. todaes attendance was bad.. to simply put it.. its atrocious.. there were less then 20 ppl in the band room at 12.30 (the time when u guys were required to fall in) isnt that pathetic??? super pathetic. imagine, a band who has approximately 40+ ppl missing. have we forgotten the quote "one band one sound, one missing no sound" ?? this afternoon, 40 missing, what do you think the sound would be??? negatively bad??? in fact, it was worse.

i understand that we should show our gratitude to the teachers from our primary school by going back and also to chat with our long lost primary school frenx. but as mr ong said, arent mr masree and mr ong also teachers? shouldnt we give them the present of our presence??? we could always go back to our primary school another time wat.

luckily, another ten or so ppl came back from their primary school visit. it did helped a little but still, many are still missing. just think abt it, if u dun turn up for todaes practice, wat do you stand to gain?? in fact, the band director be it mr masree or mr chew have to teach us the things that were taught todae all over again the nxt prcatice. doesnt that waste ur time, the conductors time, and even the time of those ppl who had came for both practices, only to learn the same thing all over again instead of learning something new??? arent you being too selfish?

syf is coming. and in 2 weeks time, cca would be suspended. after the exams which is after 14 october or so, band will resume again. by then, things will really go like a choo choo train. the nxt thing you know, u are rushing like hell and it would soon be syf. so we would realli hope to finish many things fast.

i do hope that this post wud ring the bells in ur head. think abt it.

thanks minghao for your contribution to the blog but for the record can we please have some mutual consensus before people change the skin. in other words, please ask for permission from yiching, peiwen or me first. also, the picture does have meaning. its a motto i want you guys as band members to have. which is to love your band and your band members. unity is strength. each time you look at that photo, tell yourself, my band is like that. we are a famiily! its no point having instruments and showcasing our name for superficiality. its what is inside us that matters, zwinds is but a brand name to sell us. but if we are not united we become untied. so the brand name becomes useless as a result. thus, tell yourselves that you guys are one band, one sound. one missing, no sound!

hie!!!! sam here.. finally the blog is back.. anywae... juz to review on 23rd june 2006... BAND GAMES DAE 2006!!!! anywae... i'll juz like simply sae wat happen lah... so station masters met at 7.30... we did last minute planning and off we went... the rest came at 8.. gathered.. grped.. then set off... i dun noe wat happened from here coz i station master at marina.. so ppl who want to write juz post abt ur grps' trip lohx.. anywae.. this are the stations...

1. plaza singapura - unmanned
find the price of yamaha instruments...

2. suntec city - yvonne and liyan
blowing candles.. forfeit : make up by using nail polish and eyeliner to paint and draw on body...

3. marina - me and timo
minesweeper.. forfeit : licking off choclate from one members hand...

4. city link - unmanned
finding the price of a cd at hmv

5. ngee ann - felicia, yan yu and sandra
finding the nxt clue card in the magazines in library.. forfeit.. masking tape the mouth...

fining the shop unit number according to description

7. esplanade - richmond and ao xiang
finding the correct place according to the pics we took of certain places in esplanade.. forfeit... one female and one male will hav a tomato in their mouth and lean against each other (if im not wrong)

then from their last station.. almost all the grps proceeded to east coast by cab to pit 55... there.. we had fun under the sun.. in the sand and in the sea.. it was wild.. wild.. and wet... some walked and talked on the beach.. others splashed water on each other in the sea.. and we enjoyed ourself... anywae.. it was around 6 and guess wat we saw???

yeh!!! a rainbow!!! omg.. it's beautiful.. and i guess everyone there all saed a silent wish... haha... then it was back to bbq... we ordered alot of food and we all enjoyed ourselfs preety much lah... i dunno wat else to sae.. but i guess pictures speak a thousand words.. so.. enjoy them!!!

okay to clear things abit,
the blog was deleted by timothy (yeo) because he wanted to redo the blog.

i'm truly sorry for changing the password without your permission timothy and made you so pek chek when you tried to redo this blog.

timothy, i told you the password already. you redo this blog if you have the time bah.

since there is so much dispute over this blog, i won't touch it anymore.
and since the old one is deleted away, fine. this new blog is a new start, writing new chapters of zwinds and started by timothy.

may zwinds continue to soar with music as their wings.

HELLO?!
who the hell who deleted the whole blog??!!
please have some respect for the person who started this blog.
i'm not reprimanding that person but you dont have to delete EVERYTHING.
unless someone steps out and tell me mr chew demanded for this blog to be deleted, i have nothing to say.

i know mr chew hasnt been too happy about that matter and its not the current member's fault.
yiching has certainly no intention to make mr chew unhappy too.

the past has already passed.
i certainly hope the current members will following mr chew and mr masree's instructions and continue to live the spirit of zwinds for us, the alumnis who struggled to maintain the band before.
and its mr chew who gave us the chance for the gold medal even though it was not easy.
so you guys better maintain it too.

we left the band without regrets so i certainly hope you all dont too.
